"Allez Wincobank!
The Tour de France comes up our way Sunday 6th July 2014

The Ancient Britons are stirring from their sleep to share the excitement when the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart speeds through Yorkshire on 5th and 6th July. This world famous race will climb Jenkin Road on Wincobank Hill about 4pm on Sunday 6th July. We will have an amazing weekend to remember with a fabulous Community Celebration on the Saturday and creative activities, entertainment and food on the Sunday. All in front of a giant TV screen!

We are expecting to welcome many thousands of spectators to our neighbourhood and there will be international TV coverage for the city, our community and for wonderful Wincobank Hill. Cycling enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike will flock to Wincobank Hill to cheer Team Sky as they sweep round from Holywell Road, race up Jenkin Road, take a sharp right hand turn and fly down Newman, round onto Barrow Road, along Meadowhall Road and Meadowhall Way and across the Don Valley to the finishing line at the Motorpoint Stadium.

Wincobank Common will be a Spectator Hub - a designated gathering place for crowds. Sheffield City Council will provide toilet facilities, a giant TV screen for live coverage of the race and first aid. The Friends of Wincobank Hill are working with community partners to organise a two day community festival that will be a treat for local residents and will provide visitors with a glimpse of Wincobank life, past and present.

We are working with Heeley City Farm and our local schools to build a unique Roundhouse which will be assembled on Wincobank Common near the Cartimandua Monument as the centrepiece of a symbolic Iron Age settlement. Friends of the Hill will be there in historic garb to represent our Wincobank ancestors. Put on your your tartan trews and best sacking tunic and come and join us for a bit of fun. Try your hand at weaving, spinning and other ancient crafts for which we have lost the knack.

On Saturday 5th July, children from local schools will be joining in with artwork, procession and performances. There will be a Community Marquee, a mass garden party, a falconry demonstration, a kiddies fairground, art activities and of course lots of information about how our visitors can help preserve and improve the environment of Wincobank Hill.

There will be drumming, dancing, juggling and unicycling, parachute games and live folk music celebrating Yorkshire's musical heritage. And there will be delicious food and a a bar serving Real Ale. Our Local MP David Blunkett will be calling in along with the Lord Mayor - our very own Councillor Peter Rippon

If you can't get up the hill on the Sunday because of the road closure then stop off at our local churches on Jenkin and Newman Roads, Wincobank Infant School or Upper Wincobank Chapel which will all be open serving refreshments and offering the chance to use a real loo.

And if you live along the route please remember to move your car off the route by 10pm Saturday night to ensure the route is safe for the amazing world class cyclists and that your vehicle is safe from them! come on Wincobank - let's go yellow ! Get those dusters out and make them into bunting - a much better use.

Please note that neither Wincobank HIll nor Wincobank HIll are suitable for camping and there is no access for camper vans.
