| "even though it was great to look at, they were seen as magical items not art" Well both, I think. Religious art. We have plenty of that. I agree about the carvings though, being so much later than the stones. I'd have thought the design and finish of the stones could also be seen as religious art though - an attempt to show off the revered entity to it's best advantage.
