Thanks Tiompan, I find it hard to visualise but can't think of anything harder than a implement made of sarsen to work sarsen with. Bronze implements wouldn't last long though may have been used. Its possible of course that they all came out the ground that shape but again it seems unlikely.

Gladman, sorry for diverting your thread away from Coldrum ... I'll shut up for a bit now.


The Stonehenge sarsen monoliths and lintels were worked and dressed . Although there is a lot of sarsen in the "Stonehenge layer " they were also worked off site as the finds at the Avenue show .
