Exactly. My experience at school was the same.
Have you ever seen the 'Horrible Histories' show for kids? I think its very good (teaches me a thing or too also!) and is going, some way at least, to giving them a broader sense of our history.
I haven't seen the TV programme but I've heard good things about it and the books are very popular. Anything that make history engaging and exciting has to be a good thing!
