Yep, that seems pretty likely doesn't it? There's plenty of bowl barrows that are being spread and flattened to little more than soil-marks, so a delicate little earthen bank isn't going to stand much chance! Actually, on the subject of ring ditches, presumably when you dig your ditch the upcast becomes the circular bank. So, do ring ditches have the bank on the inside (like a henge) or on the outside (like a stock enclosure)? Or does it vary? Ring ditches are usually associated with houses where the ditch is a result of rain rather than being dug .One may have just been discoveed in a scottish stone circle . Great advances in the past decade in relation to barrows and ditches ,due to more interest in tha actual construction /sequence rather than the contents . How does the bank get formed then George? In relation to ring ditch houses there is no bank as such only the ditch which was formed naturally by rain falling off the eaves ,the result visually and as seen in crop marks is similar to a ditched monument . In relation to barrows the spoil from the ditch can go into mound creation , (interesting point being that ditches are not necessarily the source of the mound material ) ,or external bank , or removed in these cases where the monument is open with no external bank , allowing access for further deposits until such time as the initial mound (s) start the process of closure .There is a lot of fascinating variation even pre mound and of course there are plenty of barrows that never had a ditch ,therefore the mound material was brought from elsewhere as was also the case in some with ditches . Hope that makes sense . re barrows without ditches, there are plenty of these near me in the chilterns that are of scraped construction. ie the mound is created by the surrounding earth being scraped up to create a ditchless barrow. Grinsell found about 10% in the Mendips were ditchless . Some have more than one ditch .Sometimes in ditchless examples the immediate area is not the source of the eventual covering material .Sometimes there are no depoits of human remains .
