Yes, it was phenomenal and we haven't an inkling what was really going on. The problem with the avenues and the anatomical explanation is that it is based on Stukeley's drawings and he will have been influenced by renaissance drawings of dissected cadavers. That insight wouldn't have been availaable to the ancients.
