Dalrymple excavated it in the mid 19th C when there were six stones standing , today there are effectively none , the big stone that is often photographed was not part of the monument . He found thre urns .
It looks like the locals smashed the remaining stones with sledgehammers , lots of sharp edged bits of granite just under the top soil .same thing had happened at Broomend of Crichie just up the road ,here it was possible to actually refit bits of a couple stones ,the Tuach stones were given a more thorough doing .

Presumably the two stones in Drew's earlier pics are remaining from the circle. Even more impressive to find an intact urn after all that went on.

The big one was dug up by Dalrymple and was a central stone used to cover burials .The other one as described by Coles was not earth fast ans possibly imported although it is on the arc of the circle and coild possibly be a one of the stones .Dalrymple and Coles suggest six stones but judging by distances between stones it looks like there were more .
The ditch was about 2m deep .
