A lot of the newer ones on Vodafone get GPS and satnav free forever, and I'm sure other vendors will - if they haven't already - follow suit. Shop around! If the fancy takes you, that is. If not - meh! :)

Yup, i bought my nokia 5800 second hand for £100, had to buy the mapping for it from Viewranger but i chose to buy the 1:50'000 via the "chooseable tiles" option.
I got the whole of Derbyshire (not just the peak district), sheffield, the whole of the avebury whs and more, all of the gypsy race area and a few other bits for £20.
I did later add to it with another £20 worth to cover the mountain areas i walk, Lake district, North Yorkshire etc.
As you say, the free car sat nav is a welcome bonus too.
