Yes, that may be the reason, we extract OSGB grid refs from magic as we personally find these more "user friendly" than lat long. When stuck with GE only we take the lat/long and use OSGB converter to make the ref "human readable".

This is interesting, might be an idea to take averaged gps readings at a clearly identifiable location using both datums/grid schemes and then compare them with readings obtained from Magic/GE and also from in-GPS datum conversion. The degree of fit between the two datums will probably vary with location though, so some points will give greater errors than others.
