Tiompan,
I find the 1:25000 maps (2.5 inches to the mile in old money), when used with a compass, can get you to a spot one metre square. My experience when with one or two friends is that their GPS has not been as accurate. One friend's GPS told us we were at a height which was higher than the summit we were on. On the way down it placed us at a grid reference which was quarter of a mile away.
Some of the mountain rescue teams have been called out due to GPS errors - the Wasdale team going to the aid of a group on Scafell Pike, whose GPS placed them in Carnforth!
I've never used GPS, as I trust myself more than I trust technology. It's just a matter of practice. Maps are like books to me. And they don't rely on batteries!

Technology, eh?
