Those concrete holes are celebrated and protected now, but you are right, when they contained Polar bears they were terrible.
I went as a youngster - two bears etching a number ten - one rocking forwards/backwards, the other turning round endlessly in a circle. I went as a father, taking my kids, they were still doing it. :(
