moss, "isn't the legend connecting Ambrosius/Merlin/Emrys to Stonehenge the one that he caused stones from a kings grave in Ireland to get up and move to Stonehenge themselves, or be moved there by Giants? I might be on Margaret Stewart's book again though. (This is the problem with a philosophy that lets you read as often as you want but write nothing down to save it. You have to remember where you saw it and find it again if you need it and can't remember exactly). I should have added the mention of Arthur in the Goddodin doesn't place him anywhere, just describes a warrior as being "No Arthur". Some scholars think its a Prince Arthur of Strathclyde with legends about Coel Hen mixed in."

Another way of telling the story..

Branwen its very, very complicated don't make me do this again ;) If you put the first two names together Merlin Ambrosius, he was the one who foretold the truth to Emyrs, and he was apparently in that semi-history (monk written), a half-crazed person called Lailoken, who suffered badly after a battle in 575, (battle madness can be experienced after any war) He went around prophesising, and his Welsh name changed to Myrddin, apparently some prophecies were real but Geoffery's made up an awful lot of the stuff....
So the stories about Stonehenge stones being flown over by the devil from Ireland (told by Geoffrey of monmouth) are one version.

Amesbury the place comes in at two points, Guinvere was sent to a convent there (there was a convent at Amesbury by Geoffrey's time), but this later Arthur/Guinevere story/Lancelot story was of course the french one....

but to make it more complicated there is an Aurelius Ambrosius, who came to Britain to avenge the killing spree of Hengist which had happened at Amesbury. Now in this tale when Aurelius had killed Hengist he decided to set up a monument on Salisbury Plain to the nobles Hengist had slain there - Stonehenge, so his brother Uther set sail for Ireland and brought back the Giant's Ring... According to Geoffrey, Vortigen was also killed by Aurelius at a hillfort near Monmouth called Ganerew...

As you can see the idea of megaliths travelling from Ireland, and bluestones travelling from Wales, are caught up in this storytelling...
