I live near the national archive for material for tours anyway, but it's still great chatting with people that have the same interests.
I found the staff on the boat tour of loch ness that leaves from fort augustus really informative, once you ask questions about stuff outwith the usual tourist script. Can't think why more people are just happy with the basic tour instead of asking questions, they were happy to chat. I encourage people to chat so the tour is different every week as I try to incorporate stuff they are interested in into the commentary. Local shopkeepers up there were good too. They would source me stuff for my artwork cheaper, like horn, and I would send my bus tour groups into their shops in return, which led to hearing more local stuff than before too.
Pubs are definately the best places though.
