Ok..

It's dimensions.

The builders of Stonehenge chose to build a structure of such a size that used up all the available Sarsens to be found on Marlborough Downs ???

Could have. Deffo. Perhaps they wanted something that was TOTALLY unlike anything else, or wanted to make a unique once-and-for-all statement, or just wanted to get people to look a bit more closely at the world they've inherited. Perhaps they wanted to show off their ability, and at the same time to connect with the Avebury region. Or perhaps it was just a way of getting people to work together one last time; a thunking great end-of-days terminal project. Like I said; we don't know. And therefore we cannot be definite. And therefore my interpretation in the face of such joyous ignorance is both:

a) equally plausible
b) equally valid

to anything else that is put forward. Until there is definite proof, I'm good to go with what I've got.
