We visited Long Meg & Her Daughters on August 31st - via the truly excellent Little Salkeld Mill cafe (piping hot real tomato soup and five different kinds of their own bread - brilliant!). The site was shrouded in mist and rain - we could hardly see from one side of the circle to the other. All you sun worshippers and stargazers should see it under these conditions! Tom Clare, in his 'Prehistoric Sites of the Lake District' (aka: Cumbria) - Tempus 2008; points out that there was a big spring just to the north-east of the stones - in the enclosure predating the stones as revealed by infrared air photography. OK - there's a clear alignment to LM herself at the winter solstice. But lets all look at the wider contexts of this, and other, sites. Coming up - Robert Farrah's new Guide to the Stone Circles of Cumbria (Hayloft) - to be published this month. Can't wait! Reviews soon - 2008 a good year for Cumbrian prehistory.
