What pisses me off most about Avebury is that visiters are encouraged just to gawp at the stones Keiller erected. Very few people go to Windmill hill (as Scott7 found out ;) or onto fyfied down where there are still 100,00 sarsens scattered around.
2 years back Colin Snell was surveying the Kennet avenue in the field beyond the walk of stones.
When he started to put sticks into the ground to mark the spot of buried stones people started to walk into the field and carried on their 'ceremonial walk'.
Very few people vist East Kennet barrow which is covered in trees and still unopened. It has wonderfull views of the other barrow, Silbury, Sanctuary and is near to Langdean stone circle.
In a post below someone actualy went to the Devils Den!
How many people bother to stop in Marlborough college and walk up the Mound there? This is the second biggest in the country and is being ruined fast.
Next time your in Avebury please take time to visit Marden, only 8 miles away, and get a feel of what Avebury would have been like if Keiller didn't do what he did.
Then there's Winterbourne Bassett double stone circle, Down Barn circle etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.
OR if you really want a Neolithic Landscape go and stay on dartmoor with its measly 11,000 monuments;)
