There are more stones inside the church (look under the back pews!), and a lot of Roman pottery was found in the field behind the church according to a local when I visited there. So yes, there is Roman history in the area. Thanks ocifant (and thanks also for the info on Alphamstone in the first place). Definitely need to go back for another ganders.
