Not sure that's a survival based genetic trait or even widespread. It's more of a simple obsession exhibited by a random minority of eccentrics, much like trainspotters....

Mind you, stone circles can grab you at a more fundamental level than locomotives can (I'd guess!) so something must be going on with them.
