The destruction of so many monuments in 1998 alone is of extreme concern. These monuments are irreplaceable and are now lost for future generations. If the rate of destruction is allowed to increase, next to nothing will remain of our archaeological heritage in a little over a hundred years. Protests don't work, petitions don't work, we're going round in circles. Smokey the Bear* warned us that he would trample, "...underfoot wasteful freeways and needless suburbs; smashing the worms of capitalism and totalitarianism..." and that he, "...will Illuminate those who would help him; but for those who would hinder or slander him, HE WILL PUT THEM OUT.
