I don't think they were used to hold poles - I'm just suggesting that they could be ...

The Deadlaw example is a part of the design but has been excluded, wilfully, by modern interpreters. With a ruler you'd find that it was two megalithic inches across. The nearest to a handle on an explanation is perhaps bound up with that dimension. Somehow.
