Concentrating on the 'How' rather than the 'Why' is always going to be a back alley. I believe I must be closer to the truth on many of these matters, simply because I've been moving stones for 25 years. Stone-rowing is better termed 'levering' FFS and is used for specific operations - lifting the stone out, going round corners and lifting it up are the operations that spring to mind. If there is so much disagreement studying the past how much would there have been in prehistory and how was it managed? Luckily the backwoods granarian hasn't shown up, at least.
