They would have to be finger marks made before the lichen grew of course. Take a look at this though..http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/7201 - it clearly shows the darkened marks from modern hands and fingers. Leave it to brew for a while and you would get a forest of lichen

Interesting word "lichen". Very similar in Latin and Greek, but also so similar to the Welsh "lech" meaning "stone" I believe. Could it have originally meant a "stone eater"?
