As important as Thornborough is to us - it's hardly an icon is it? An icon is a visible and distinctive image surely. Why has the whole country gone daft over popularity polls? We are asked to vote for the best ancient monuments, stately homes, gardens, icons, ballroom dancers, ice skaters, big brother, pop idols etc etc? Could the answer be in the fabulous rake offs from texting and phoning? At least web voting is free, but let's not take it too seriously.
