Just go and look at the two carved stairs. When were they carved ? - probably when either the new castle or the keep was built - maybe 1150 - 1250. So if the marks on them are cupmarks (and one's on the tread of the stair) then they are post-1250 cupmarks.

It'll take me a month to get a photograph. The Black Gatehouse has a flat on the top, which is rented out and owned by the Society of Antiquarians, who meet in the rooms below (down the page http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.[...]le%20upon%20Tyne%20History.htm ).

One of the reasons the City Walls are so massive is that there was so much Roman stone lying about. Their quarry is still worked (in Gateshead). Some of the Roman carved bits can be identified in the walls, particularly around the Westgate Road side.
