Great thread Pilgrim - really enjoyed reading all the sensitive and erudite posts that have come in on it.
Have racked my brains and my dictionaries for an alternative to the word 'sacred' but cant find anything half decent to replace it. Maybe we're stuck with the word after all but it could be worse ('religious' for example). The terms Sacred Site, Sacred Landscape etc have an easy ring to them - perhaps we should leave well alone and let the word evolve from its strictly 'sacred' associations into something indicating harmony, mystery and 'specialness' - something that is best not pined down too precisely.
