It looks worse than it is, when viewed across Stickle Tarn. The Rake is easy angled, has big holds, and runs in a groove, with the main face of the crag rising on your right and the retaining wall of the groove on your left......until about half height. Here a very exposed walk of about fifteen feet along a narrow ledge leads back to the groove, which rises steeply for about ten feet, with a big drop. After that it's back to the security of a large ledge system. Don't ever become complacent, as accidents often occur after the hardest parts of a scramble or climb, due to people relaxing and becoming complacent. If you've got a bit of a head for heights you'll find it easy. If you can't stand heights forget it.
Once on top, it's a walk of about three quarters of a mile across the fell to the top of the scree of the big, steep Pike of Stickle gully, a quarter of the way down which is the site of the stone axe factory, where Neolithic axes were roughed out before being taken down to the valley for finishing.
Don't forget to visit the decorated Langdale Boulders below Copt Howe on the way down the valley.
