In this pic' you can see the amazing contrast between the black stone and it's sister, which has fallen over. Its sister stone is a lovely peach/rose colour, the two of them together show a remarkable aesthetic contrast.

It didn't look like natural colouring to me as the black fades as you get nearer to the ground.
But perhaps the blackness of the stone only seemed exaggerated to me because of its position in the white sands of the machair, and it IS just a black stone.
