A suspicious stone circle at Machynlleth in Wales

Whilst passing through Machynlleth in Wales (just north of Aberystwyth) I went to investigate a standing stone marked on the 1:25000 OS map, near the golf course at the eastern end of the town (Grid ref SH 755 008). On inspection I found a small stone circle, with a large stone at the centre which had a smaller circular stone to its side resting one a smaller irregular stone. Also, another of the stones was just inside of the others, so not really part of the circle. I suspect some kind of recent folly or something, although the noting of the 'standing stone' on the OS map implies that one of the stones might be ancient. Does anyone else have any clues/information as to what is going on here?
