Dr. Margaret Murray wrote 'God of the Witches' many years ago and as an anthropologist (I think) she theorised that such creatures as fairies, dwarves etc are in reality a race memory of the earlier inhabitants of Britain who were driven to live in inhospitable places by rotten Romans and later invaders/immigrants. The green/russet colours of the typical little people clothing, together with hoods, would have been ideal for hiding on the moors or hilltops etc. So perhaps more than a grain of truth in the folklore.
