I know what u mean Gof, but on Dartmoor it's different. The moor is often very barren and without easy map reading aids (farms / rivers / field walls / tracks / mining remains etc). After a while it all starts to look the same. The 'paths' marked on maps don't always exist on the ground because they aren't used enough, aren't well marked, and cross straight through barren areas. In some places there are a multitude of tiny paths (sheep paths I guess), but no obvious main path. In good visability and with a map, compass & good sense of direction it's ok; not so good in poor visability.
