A motte is one of those things that the Normans put their castles on to of. The way I tell if a mound is a motte is to look on the map :-)
That said, as commented upon in a recent thread, it's very likely that a lot of Norman mottes were built on top of big barrows or passage tombs anyway. Wanna build a bump? Build it on a bump!
