if folks were burying stones to protect them from the Church (does this include smashing up sarsens to build cottages, not to mention xtian houses of worship?), they don't seem to have been making a very good job of it, judging by the wrecked Ring Stone in the Southern Inner Circle and the majority of Sanctuary stones carted off by a farmer in the 18th century.

whatever the reason/s for the deliberate destruction of this monument, its sacred nature - revealed by absence of large scale domestic remains and presence of numerous ritual deposits - calls for restitution, respect: let's see those buried stones up in the sunlight again, please!
