Wasn't there a bit of a trend amongst 17th/18thC christian folk to topple the stones into fire pits then smash them with hammers? Some time ago, when lifting a fallen stone they found the skeleton of a 17thC barber/surgeon under one of them, who had been crushed by the stone when it was toppled.... his own daft fault really!
