Surely to say they were removed so more crops could be grown, isn't that a bit spurious? In days gone by when you could have veered round them with your plough (rather than having to back up the combine harvester) it wouldn't have been that much bother - much less bother than moving the enormous things - and for what benefit? a few square feet extra land? Isn't the land around avebury beautifully fertile? It's not like they would have been grubbing about for land (like wot they said on the programme about the terraces on glastonbury tor).
