No, the only side loads on the tower (that could cause it to topple) occur when the block is sliding against the tower or if we try to attach the block to the tower in some way, like lashing it to a pivot log as was suggested. The former can be resisted by diagonal bracing logs from the ground to the top of the tower. The latter (if we decided to do it that way) would be eliminated by making sure that the pivot log has only limited restraint to the tower so that it would "pop" out of its mountings as soon as the stone hits the back of the hole. The force of the block against the tower would keep it in place until this point was reached.
