The "natural cleft" is an extreme example of a chalk dry valley.

Totally natural in origin OR formed by the Devil sitting down to rest on the Downs one day...take your pick (Science or corrupted native Dreamtime?)

The earthworks are iron age and occupy the spur formed by the valley seperating the lead scarp from the rest of the Downs.

Or did I misunderstand?
