On the question of Roman building materials, Verulamium was built almost entirely out of brick and local flint.
The Roman bricks were re-used in the building of the Abbey, and are still visible both at the Cathedral (technically it's the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban) and in what remains of the Roman city (Verulamium park).
