My first reaction (before reading the comment from Kammer's friend) was flood defense on the side next to the river, and drainage channel / defense on the bit that's perpendicular (is that the right word? i.e. right angles) to the river. Not sure about the bit in the middle of the field? maybe it was two fields before?
I'm no expert so please don't think I'm trying to be negative - please research away and maybe we'll find out what it definbately is??
PS - I think the ewe with two kids is giving you the evil eye in one of those pics.
