I grew up near Amesbury and seem to remember "hanging stones" being mentioned in a history class at school.
Unless we invent a time machine I doubt we will ever really know.
I do remember a tourist once asking me "ze vay to vood hen ger, please" ... it was only a couple of hours later that I realised what he meant. Doh!!
