the sense of History on this hillside in South Wales is absolute.
View from inside the Hillfort looking north towards what may have been a small entrance?
Photo from the top of the Hillfort looking west – The end of a perfect day.
Caerhun with Maen Y Bardd in the background to the right.
For an idea as to how small and intimate this circle is (and difficult to spot when the vegetation full) I have included Mrs Derfel and the faithful hound.
Got followed by a black labrador dog the whole time I was here, a local told me that he accompanies everyone to the dolmen.
Just for scale I have included myself in the picture. That capstone is impressive!
Simply a perfect place – and very complex. 13 cists, a henge, a stone circle and a ditch.
Beyond words what some people are capable of :(
Difficult to find but well worth it once you are there. Spent ages there and wondered how many other similar complexes are waiting to be descovered beneath the bog.
The dolmen is right on the side of the road, between the road and the front door of the house. Although I knocked before taking the picture, I should imagine the owners are well used to passer’s by stopping to admire the dolmen. I just wish I had something as impressive on my front doorstep!
Really suprised to learn that they held horesraces here in the past
Perfect shot at the end of a perfect day, Cairnholy really is special.
