‘Callanish: the avenue’ – watercolour painting made in the afternoon of Friday 14 July.
540mm x 290mm
Looking straight up the avenue, the stones were surrounded by pink grasses and carpets of buttercups. Irresistible!

The title is inspired by a song by Porcupine Tree. Joolio Geordio visited me with Moey as I was painting this at the stones. He introduced me to the music of Porcupine Tree more than two years ago and happened to be wearing a Porcupine Tree T shirt on Friday morning. Thanks for the music and the most appropriate of titles Joolio!
From my sketchbook: A quick 20 minute pencil scribble before the sun finally disappeared and I had to get back to the house to see Big Brother. I cunningly left out the gate and the fence. Eat your hearts out, photographers.
From my sketchbook: an incredibly quick painted study – I was beginning to get cold and the paint wouldn’t dry.
From my sketchbook: a closer study of the stones, featuring all that lovely grainyness of the gneiss.
From my sketchbook: My first attempt at working out all those intervals...
A very quick sketch of the recumbent and flankers. What a joy this place is.
I fell in love with this stone circle. It is completely perfect.
Big Sweetie took us here to eat our picnic. What a charming spot!
the grass was so high we could hardly see the stones!

The view from the top of Rhossili Down onto the beach at the western end of the Gower. Behind the camera lie Sweyne Howes chambered tombs.
The genuine ancient stone is nearest to the camera – the dodgy one is up the hill a bit to the left. But look at the stone the dodgy one is mounted on... a bit sus!
The tallest of us pictured is 6’5”. Guess the height of the stone!
This pile of stones is right next to Maen Cetty.
I had no idea it’d be this big – so here’s photo with people in it for scale.
It’s a giant!!
Use this photo to help you locate it up there in the dunes against the backdrop of the village. We took ages to find it.
It wasn’t a big tomb, but I liked it big-style.
It’s huge in there and you can stand upright in it for a very long way back.
There are two entrances to Cathole cave. This one’s barred. We wondered if it was in here they found archaeological remains or whether it was just too plain dangerous in there!
Winter morning light in this perfect little valley.
It really is RIGHT by the roadside!
The lump in the foreground in the long barrow. The weirdy shaped mountian in the background, Sugar Loaf hill, is surely what it’s pointing at...
Nice to see the residents care enough to have erected a sign against their local monument.
Another one like Rock n Rollright, but in this one all the stones are deliberately linked
