Tims been dowsing again!
There are loads of sites in this area so plenty of hill climbs coming up. The Deveron runs near my home town so it will be good to see it closer to it’s source.
I find it hard to beleve that these guys didn’t spot the stones amongst the bushes. Luckily for me John Porter did.
No mention of the bones.
Massive stone standing opposite Bennachie and I’ll visit it again as the camera was left in the car. No bad thing!
Just a short distance from the Stirling Cairn, this time Bronze Age.
I climbed and walked around this hill just for a walk and found cairns, wells and tremendous scenery all over the place! A Neolithic cairn unfortunately robbed but enough left for the imagination.
Not far from the ring cairn on the same hill. There are two cairns sitting not far apart.
This place must have been a pretty special place. What a shame this site doesn’t describe the views.
Canmore mention the Danes but not the witches therefore RCAHMS 1 Locals 1.
This is why the local farmers look after it!
Another beautiful place, on the doorstep almost literally!
These will give the directions to stone. I’ll put up field notes when I visit it myself.
More accurate info from an excellent site.
This stone has apparently nothing to do with cuckoos. Instead it remembers a fallen and forgotten general.
All about dowsing for patterns of the past which apparently suggests that some single stones were once part of larger monuments. Some interesting comments on Monkshill and others in the North East.
Plenty info on the two legends that engulf Barra Hill. One I,d heard, Jock O Bennachie, and one I hadn’t, the William Wallace connection. Robert the Bruce had plenty to do in this area also.
Hints that this stone might have been at this spot for a lot longer than Bruces time. This site has Tim’s World plans on it.
A mad religious person involved, now there’s a surprise!
This circle is better known as Rappla Wood, pages 21-25, because there used to be another circle at Burreldales, page 21, as well as at Rappla Burn, pages 25 and 26.
Coles at his useful thorough best with Boyndie Church on page 9 and the St. Brandans Stanes info is on pages 9, 10 and 11.
More about the Culsh circle and monument. Pretty good web site for various places of interest in the Banff and Buchan area.
Not much about Culsalmond. Even less about Colpy on page 90.
Not much here but enough to let you know that the circle had a sad end. Info on page 90.
All the info required on pages 4,5 and 6. This circle is better known as Howemill.
More info on pages 2 and 3.
More about the links between Cairnhall, Inverurie, Broomend and Tuach. What a pity that most of the stones were moved in the name of progress!
This makes the story even more sad! The monument to the battle can be seen from the A96.
All the myths and legends plus the facts as well.
Like Cullernie not much here as the site is lobbed in with others in a similar condition.
More words and a diagram from the great man. On pages 25 and 26.
Coles thought this site was so bad that he didn’t even visit and gives a sad but true tale on pages 21 and 22. Shame really, the views down this road are some of the best in the North East.
This stone circle visited in much cleaner and tidier times. They are described on pages 26-29. I wonder what Mr. Coles would think about the mess that is here at present!
Hard to find, good boots needed and watch out for barbed wire fences. Reading pages 56, 57, 58 and 59 should make it easier.
So the building remains are the bottom of farmstead! No sign of the well or the saint!
Some more info and pictures. The circle is now protected by a fence!
There is more to this circle than I thought. Mr Cole’s writings and detailed plans are on pages 88 and 89.
He has a lot to say about Braehead and covers it on pages 62, 63, 64 and 65.
Mr Cole’s thoughts and writings including a picture on page 65.
More interesting stuff from Tim! He has plenty to deal with in this area!!
All the information needed. I’m glad to say that the field clearance has been removed the centre of the circle!
More details about Auchmachar which is also known as the “Clump”.
The most recent photos I’ve seen complete with the fence. Good to hear that the locals stood firm against ASDA!
This should have been a magnificent site. Beautiful views over the Ythan east and west.
A closer examination!
The whole saga, for me, explained. This is wonderful stuff.
No real mention of a stone circle here but still well worth a read.
Loads if info here including all the stone measurements.
