Image of Cairn to SW of Hardknott Castle (Round Cairn) by GLADMAN

Looking towards Harknott Pass descending Harter Fell to Jubilee Bridge.... the approximate site of the cairn is indicated. Why not stop off and have a look if you’re passing by? You can also imagine how miserable the Roman auxillaries must have been when stationed here in winter ..... and laugh!

Looking from near the summit of Harter Fell the cairn occupies a prominent position overlooking what must have always been the route across these hills. The Roman fort of Hardknott Castle (Mediobogdvm) stands above to the right. Well it would, wouldn’t it? But then we know from experience that Bronze Age peoples (assuming this cairn is actually from that period) often avoided the highest spot. Talking of ‘highest spots’, England’s highest peaks crown the horizon.
