The OS trig pillar bears a plaque stating that it is an offence to damage it. Pity such thought was not – is not – accorded the cairn.

We had a long arguement about its antiquity! It seems rearrangement was done to make a look-out shelter in wartime.
Yeah. In a way it could be argued that sort of adds to its history... I mean there are umpteen pillboxes near where I live which no-one even gives a thought to, but one day may be seen as invaluable reflections of a time when we really thought the Germans were coming.
Walkers' shelters are completely another matter. I refuse to set foot in them on principle, having no wish to be associated with people who would undertake such vandalism
There's something quite reassuring about trig points too. These will become ever scarcer and more decayed, as the OS don't need them anymore with the advent of ever more accurate GPS mapping and surveying techniques. They have stopped maintaining them as far as I know.
