This is a fascinating stone; as you will have seen it is enormous and begs the question, was there an eastern entrance to the henge and was this a portal stone. Given this is the point the Avebury people (and builders) would have walked down from the Ridgeway/Fyfield Down, it seems very possible.
Yes, that sounds possible, it must be comparable with the Swindon Stone or 1/98 at the south - the eastern gap in the bank has certainly been there since Aubrey's time. The NE quadrant seems to be largely avoided, except for the Cove and a few dog-walkers on the bank itself. Actually, I think it's a rather lovely part of the monument, because there's so much more room than elsewhere.
