Many thanks June, it was a beautiful time to visit. Yes, do-able from Stroud - we got the bus to Nailsworth (which goes via Stroud) and walked through Woodchester Park. However, Monday - Saturday there is a bus that goes to Uley (20) - not terribly frequent - that would get you within a mile of the barrow and Uley Bury hillfort. Link to bus times:

That is really helpful, I've saved your post into Word so I don't lose sight of it. The train journey from Swindon to Stroud is a beautiful one and I feel at home in Stroud. I also have a friend who is the proud owner of a new yellow low-carbon-emission Fiat; her parents live in Painswick. She is open to bribes of cake and coffee ... so one way or the other I will visit soon.

Good luck with that and enjoy - can't say fairer than coffee and cake. If you're in the Painswick area a trip to West Tump (near Cranham) is not far away.
