One of the stones of the stone row.
There are similarities in shape between this stone and the Old Wife’s Neck. The Old Wife’s neck is also part of a row of stones but is not generally acknowleged as a ‘stone row’ as it is part of a linear earthwork. It’s a long shot but could there possibly be some anthropromorphic thing going on here?
Another tenuous link could be that the nearby Wheeldale ‘roman’ road, also know as the Old Wife’s Way, crosses the Wheeldale Beck just beside the footpath to these stones....
