The latest newsletter of the Cornwall Archaeological Society brings news that the Eathorn Menhir, long stuck at the side of a field and covered in ivy and chicken wire, has now been re-erected in its original position.
With the help of Steve Hartgroves of CAU and the Earth Mysteries Group the original base was found and the stone placed back in it using a local farmers crane.
Sadly this news came 24 hours too late for me...I was down on the Lizard yesterday and if I had known would have popped round for a photo.
Hi there...this is a rather belated reaction to the news of the re-erection! I visited my namesake - I'm an Eathorne - way back in the early 1990's. I was rather sad to find it laying in a hedge. I spoke with a lovely couple living nearby who, once learning of my interest in the stone because of my name, invited me in to their house. They told me the story that they knew about its downfall and showed me a fabulous old photograph of the Eathorne Menhir standing before it had been vandalised by some desperate farmer wanting to sell it for a few shilling! The top was pointed and a little crooked, like a very tall wizards hat.
Anyway, I was just remembering it this afternoon and out of curiousity thought I would do an online search....and here we are.
I'm so delighted that the lovely old menhir is back in its rightful place. A big thank you to all involved.
Sally.
Love anecdotes like this..............
