A curious little standing stone on the path between the Grubstones and the Twelve Apostles, bearing what looks to be a Masonic emblem.
Maybe a prehistoric standing stone, or maybe the work of the 16th C Walter Hawksworth, known to be a mason and erecter of stones around these parts??

I like the picture Andy. I've always liked this little stone and, as the years have gone by and I've looked at it, and looked again, and again (etc.), still aint 100% about its nature. I tend to go for the prehistoric thought on it (though the little squiggle on top is pretty recent - certainly wasn't there when I was a kid), but then it may be an old milestone. The excellent freezing cold spring of water a few hundred yards further west was an old stopping point for travellers in ages past, so p'raps this old stone was a marker of sorts. We'll probably never know...
Hope all's well. Cheers - Paul
