The unsolved mystery of how the altar stone of Stonehenge arrived in Wiltshire could finally be partly explained by new research.
The monolith is believed to have originated in the Orcadian Basin of north-east Scotland, but how it ended up in Salisbury remained unknown.
This is a pretty wacky theory - the altar stone got moved by a glacier to Doggerbank and then sat there for millennia before being moved by humans to Stonehenge. It seems likelier to me it was moved all the way from Caithness because the stone itself had meaning to people, although of course perhaps it was a startling erratic on Doggerbank. Still, the paper just seems to be adding lots of unnecessary variables.
I'm prepared to believe many things :-)
Yay, it must be summer as it's time for some more Stonehenge theories.
Other prehistoric monuments are available.
Just waiting for Nessie to appear as well :-)
